12-24-22 The Gift Has Been Given

The Gift Has Been Given (Isaiah 9:2-7)

David Peterson / General

Christmas; Love / Isaiah 9:2–7

Sermon type: Textual-Topical

Proposition: A child can change the world. It can happen with any child. However, this child did what no other child has been able to do. He lived the truth. He did the right. He embodied the good. He alone can lead our lives to their fulfillment.

I. A Child Was Born (Isaiah 9:6a)

1. The potential of a child. Nothing else in all creation.

CHICAGO (CBS) — It took 60 years, thousands of scientists, 192 lasers, and a target the size of a human hair – but a major scientific breakthrough for humankind was achieved in a trillionth of a second.

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California was the first to successfully replicate the process of how the sun makes energy, on earth – nuclear fusion ignition.

2. Grounded in our unique capacity

II. What He was Called (Isaiah 9:6b)

1. Our inability to unlock the code of the good, the right, the true

Peace on Earth, can it be

Years from now, perhaps we’ll see

See the day of glory

See the day, when men of good will

Live in peace, live in peace again

Peace on Earth, can it be

2. He is recognized as the one who breaks the code and embodies the truth

III. All is Placed on His Shoulders (Isaiah 9:7)

1. The human need represented at the beginning of the Bible, one to lead us

2. He appeared

A Christmas Poem: “Because One Child Is Born”

More light than we can learn,

More wealth than we can treasure,

More love than we can earn,

More peace than we can measure,

Because one Child is born.
