On this night we reflect on all Christ endured to take upon himself the sins of the world. Seven readers share the account of Jesus’ arrest, trial and crucifixion. We sing the old hymns about the cross and offer up prayers to God. To symbolize Jesus’ agony on the cross we extinguish candles and gradually dim the sanctuary lights. The name given this ancient custom is Tenebrae, meaning a service of shadows and darkness.
